Here’s a couple of excellent books for teaching science the Charlotte Mason way.
Fabre’s Book of Insects by Jean-Henri Fabre. This book is written by the very famous French nineteenth century entymologist, Jean Henri Fabre. Fabre’s method of studying the insects was simple observation. In true Charlotte Mason style, Fabre simple watched the insects and wrote what he saw. His books are entertaining, gentle, honest and they are certainly treasures. They are perfect for Charlotte Mason advocates, as observation, drawing and narration fit perfectly with this book.
The Life of Jean-Henri Fabre The Entymologist by Bernard Miall. A story about a wonderful man. This is a long book (over 400 pages) and first published in 1921. So you can expect it to be written in an older style and containing a lot of detail. Suitable for the serious student of Fabre.
Also, why not take a moment to visit the Jean-Henri Fabre e-museum.
Keeping a Nature Journal by Clare Walker Leslie. This beautiful book will inspire you to start and keep a nature journal with your children.
Archimedes and the Door to Science by Jeanne Bendick. A great science history story book to inspire your children and you.
TheLibrarian who Measured the Earth by Kathryn Lasky. A lovely picture book telling the story of Erotosthenes who calculated the circumference of the earth in ancient Egypt.
The “Exploring Creation” series is a creationist Christian series for homeschooled children aged up to 12 or so, using some of the ideas and practices of Charlotte Mason. Each book contains all the information needed for a year’s work in science.
