Talking books are a great way to ‘read’ books, if you drive a lot, or use an MP3 player or a discman. They work well for children who love the stories but are still slow readers. They work well if you want to listen to the same story over and over. They are a great resource and are fun to share. Here’s a few of my favourite books on CD.

For adults:
The Forsyte Saga: Book 1: The Man of Property by John Galsworthy. Read by Martin Jarvis. A fabulous nineteenth century story, (you may have seen it serialised on television) read by my favourite reader, Martin Jarvis. This is a new recording, just released in 2009. Abridged, 4 CDs, 5 hours of listening. Highly recommended.
The Bronte Collection: “Wuthering Heights”, “The Tenant of Wildfell Hall”, “Jane Eyre” and “Villette By Emily Bronte and Charlotte Bronte. Read by Carole Boyd, David Rintoul and Hannah Gordon
A Room With A View by E M Forster. Read by Juliet Stevenson
For Children
Lamb’s Tales From Shakespeare written by Charles and Mary Lamb, read by my favourite, Martin Jarvis. Complete and unabridged.
The Horse and His Boy by C S Lewis. Performed by a full cast of famous British actors.
The Lord of the Rings: The complete trilogy. by J R R Tolkein. This is a BBC dramatisation. I recommend it most highly; it has long been an absolute top favourite with our family.
For Very Young Children
Just So Stories read by Johnny Morris – he is a fabulous story teller!
The Wind in the Willows Read by Martin Javis, a fabulous reader.
Pinocchio by Carlo Carlodi. Read by Martin Jarvis. My favourite reader. This is a cassette, not a CD.
